The Sketchbook Project, The Art House, Brooklyn, NY

The Sketchbook Project is one of several projects open to members of The Art House community every year. The Art House is a library of art work and a gallery in operation in Brooklyn, NY. Each artist who signs up is sent an 80 page 6x8 inch Moleskin Sketchbook and is assigned a theme. My theme was "Ahhh! Monsters!". The artists are asked to fill the sketchbook based on his or her theme. The finished sketchbooks travel around the country and are displayed at various galleries. Their final destination is at The Art House Library where they can be checked out by visitors.

I decided to name my sketchbook Beauty in the Eyes of the Editor and is based on the idea that the beauty industry is one of the worst "monsters" of our generation. The book's pages are filled with information on truths about the beauty industry, side effects of certain ingredients used in cosmetics, and various sketches. The words and sketches are covered by collaged images from magazines which I put together to create women's faces. The action I did of creating "beauty" is the similar to the actions that editors do to photographs of models using computers because, apparently, real women are not beautiful enough. This is my first piece of artwork that I take a strong opinion with, but it was fun to create something as political and as challenging as Beauty in the Eyes of the Editor.

Red Hot Art Festival is a community supported art festival featuring over 100 emerging artists from the Twin Cities metro area. This will be my first art festival and first showing of my work in Minnesota since graduating last spring. I am excited to be showing outside of Mankato and at such an exciting event! There will be tons of local bands, art battles, food, and, of course lots of great art to look at and to buy. Red Hot Art is an annual event put on by Steven's Square Center for the Arts. ARTIST STATEMENT

The work I have featured in this show challenge the way in which the brain interprets sight. Our brains have several preconceptions when looking at a painting. We assume that the object held within a picture frame is flat. We assume that paintings are actually two-dimensional even though they often suggest three-dimensionality. We assume that dark colors recede and light colors advance. We assume that the surface of a painting is all that we should consider. We assume that the subject is placed on top of the background to cover it up. My paintings, prints, and collages challenge the viewer to put away these misconceptions and believe, instead, what the eye is actually seeing. My work has deep historical connections but the idea of changing the way we see could not be more applicable and significant to our world today.

Artist Statement

My goal for the paintings was to explore the tenuous nature of objectness through interaction of the formal elements of paintings. This was achieved through the thickness of the canvases, the treatment of the sides of the canvases, and the push and pull effects of the chosen colors. The titles of the paintings suggest a specific yet completely random date in my lifetime. They are meant to rhetorically ask the viewer where he or she was on that date to perhaps conger up some forgotten moments. The featured prints are reactions to the paintings and the collages are reactions to the prints while incorporating the ideals of Colorfield Painting. This exhibition represents the beginning stage of my research of Barnett Newman and Post Painterly Colorfield Abstraction.

Artist Statement

I don’t paint to separate myself from others. I don’t paint for fame and not for financial gain. I don’t paint because it is what I was put on this earth to do. And I certainly don’t paint to express my most inner emotions. I simply paint because it makes me happy. For me, making art, whether it is painting, drawing, or printmaking, is a way to slow down time and allow me to enjoy every minute of my life. Everything outside is chaotic, frantic, and sometimes depressing but inside my studio, I create my own world where I am in charge of everything from music to conversation to lighting. Painting, however, can be as heart-wrenching and difficult as anything outside, but I use those times as challenges and work through them.
I have no plans right now to attend graduate school and I may never do so, but I know I will be creating some form of art for the rest of my life. My dream is not to teach but to support others. My goal is to someday open a gallery focusing on emerging artists. I hope to support others with the same encouragement and real support that I have received over the past years. Right now I am at the bottom of the totem pole and I might not ever reach the top, but that’s fine with me because I am doing what truly makes me happy.
